The KidZooU is the Philadelphia Zoo’s first LEED Gold-certified exhibit.
LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) is a certification process administered by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). It is a rating system that associates points for design and construction practices that result in more energy efficient and environmentally responsible buildings. The Philadelphia Zoo has implemented several green practices to make the KidZooU an "earth-friendly Children’s Zoo".
Some of KidZooU's sustainable features include: geothermal wells for heating and cooling; daylighting; rain water collection for use as gray water to flush the public toilets; rain gardens and vegetated roofs to reduce water runoff into storm drains; building reuse (renovation of the former pachyderm exhibit); and recycled and salvage building materials.
Join KidZooU to create an earth friendly environment at home, at school, or throughout your community! If a million kids turned their computers off for two hours, that would be equivalent to taking 15,000 cars off the road for one day! The solutions are simple and easy to do. Check out the Energy Saving, Water Conservation and Recycling sections to see how the Zoo and you can make a difference to Save Energy to Save Wildlife!
